So let's get this party started.... The very first thing to do is... have a ...

WEDDING PLANNING PARTY - organise a wedding planning PARTY.  Seriously, this is a great way to get all the information and initial decisions sorted from the beginning.  Invite both sides of the family, inform them, the purpose of the party.  Have some drinks and simple food, keep it simple, so you can concentrate on the wedding planning.  I would recommend you serve Kokum Pani.  we have a party size pack of 5 Liters, perfect for sharing at events like this.  Chill in the fridge for a couple of hours and serve in glasses with chopped mint for added fun.  This is an excellent time to sample "Kokum Pani" with your family.
Before your families arrive for the wedding planning party, be ready to take notes, so you can go over the discussion later, or you can even do a video recording.  Set up and create a facebook group, or WhatsApp group and add all the members of the family that need to be in the discussions for your wedding planning. Below we have listed the points you should discuss

POINTS TO DECIDE AT THE WEDDING PLANNING PARTY:

  • Budget - This is a good first step.  with a budget in mind you can plan your wedding realistically and not put yourself or your families under unnecessary stress.  It is a good idea to allow 10 to 30 percent extra, for unplanned and unforeseen expenses.
  • Jewelry and gifts and wedding expenses - decided on the details of gifts and jewelry to be exchanged by both families.  decided how wedding expenses are to be shared. Decided how the wedding expenses are to be paid.
  • Number of guest - Both families should draw up a list of guests. It is natural for the guest list to go through a couple of revisions, there will be add ons and removals from the guest list.  The size of your guest list will dictate the type of venue you need to hire.
  • Style and Theme - Decide on a style for the wedding.  Look up magazines, search Pinterest for ideas.  put together a few images of the style and themes you are interested in and project it or create a slide to show both families.  you can then take a poll on which style and theme is best.
  • Maharaj/Priest - take views of both families on any preferences for booking the Priest.
  • Events leading up to the main Marriage - Plan the other events, like the Mehendi, Haldi, Sangeet etc.  For each event draw up a check list e.g. number of guests, food, Drinks decor, theme, get Mehendi artist, band for Sangeet, Hair stylist, beautician etc.
  • Dress - put together images of the style of wedding wear, not just for bride and groom, but also for father and mother of bride and groom, and all the other family members you feel should be included.
By the end of the Party you should have a good planning structure for your wedding.

Now you need to visit some of the venues, and get catering organised.

VENUE
Make a list of the venues you like.  Phone ahead to ask if they are available for your dates, then go visit.  It would be such a waste of your time, going to see a venue when they are not available for the dates you want. so this is the information you need to get from the venue to decided if that venue is suitable for your marriage celebration:

  1.  Capacity: - will it fit all your guest.  You don't want a very big venue for a smaller number of guest.  or vice versa.
  2. Type: marriage hall, a banquet hall, outdoor space. plan the venue needs for the Mehendi and Sangeet events and any other events you may have planned. seating arrangements, tables etc
  3. Availability of the venue for your dates
  4. Accommodation: - The wedding party, family members and some guests will need accommodation.  work out how much accommodation your require and if the venue will be able to provide for your needs
  5. Food and extras: not just for the weeding event but for family staying at the venue, is food included, consider, parking facilities, power generators, back up facilities, can you negotiate a package deal.
  6. Catering: - for the main wedding event and the other celebrations leading up to the event
  7. Music: - For the main wedding shaadi as well as the other events
  8. Lighting: - for the main wedding and other events.
